The truth of the matter is that there is really very little that you can do to beat bad or inexperienced players. There really isn't much you can do in the way of strategy, tricks, or complex plays that can take this player out. I remember reading an interesting comparison between bad poker players and bad basketball players in a book by Phil Gordon. It went something like this:
(Paraphrasing) Trying to use complicated tactics against a poker player who has no idea what their doing simply will not work. It's like playing basketball against a bad basketball player or someone who has never played basketball before. A fancy pump fake won't work against this player, because he doesn't even know that he should jump to try to block the shot. Against this player, you'd be best off just taking the shot when you've got a good shot of hitting the basket.
When you apply this to poker, it simply means that only strong hands will beat bad players. Bluffs won't usually work. One pair can be bad news when he backdoors two pair. Look for monster hands: straights, flushes, sets, full houses, etc., to beat this player. When you've got it, bet big and move as many chips out of this player's stack as possible.
When it comes to freerolls in particular, you will experience an overwhelming number of these types of players for multiple reasons. Many of the players are inexperienced and simply looking for some practice and a chance at some money without having to risk any of their own. It's understandable. I wouldn't want to risk my own money on a chess match, but if I ever wanted to in the future, I would most likely starting off playing some free games against my husband (who is a very skilled chess player. I've never seen him lose a match) or my step-dad (who developed the AI for the original Chessmaster software). One thing you won't see though, is me buying into a chess tournament with my own money!
You'll also see alot of bad play in freerolls form people who aren't necessarily bad players. Some people just play crazy because they have nothing at risk, and therefore can only win but cannot sustain any losses. Personally, I see this perspective as skewed. Any opportunity I have to win money playing poker feels like a loss to me when I don't walk away with a profit.
When it comes to cashing in freerolls (and I've cashed in plenty), the bottom line is that you can pretty much throw most complicated maneuvers out of your bag of tricks and just play big hands for big pots.
